John McCann has three likes – baseball (the New York Yankees to be exact), Hilton Head Island and being Mayor of Hilton Head Island – not specifically in that order. They all weigh equally to him. Perhaps, above all, Mayor McCann just wants his home base of 18 years to be the best community around. Accolades, such as being named the #1 Island in the continental United States by Travel & Leisure magazine readers, give credence to McCann’s belief that despite the challenges Hilton Head Island wrestles with, it is still a great community. Ever since he took office as a councilman in 2012, McCann has worked to better the community. With a down-to-earth personality, McCann engages with residents from all Island neighborhoods, making sure he listens to their concerns. He takes pride in representing the Island and its citizens and feels he has hit some home runs in finding meaningful resolutions to road improvements, cultural preservation and other tough issues. He attributes his success thus far as a mayor to support from his family, Town staff, fellow council members and residents, who helped him ascend to a higher office.
